Why heat pumps need defrost
In heating mode, the outdoor coil can run below freezing and collect frost.
Defrost temporarily reverses the system to melt that frost and restore airflow.
Symptoms of defrost trouble
The outdoor coil may become encased in ice, the unit may stay in defrost too long, or defrost may happen too frequently.
Steam during a normal defrost cycle is not itself a problem.
Problems that mimic board failure
A failed sensor, low refrigerant, outdoor-fan problem, drainage issue, wiring fault, or abnormal weather exposure can create similar icing.
The board should not be blamed until its inputs and outputs are checked.
How it is diagnosed
Technicians test sensors, board timing or logic, compressor and fan commands, coil temperature, and the ability to initiate and terminate defrost.
Refrigerant conditions and outdoor airflow are also evaluated.
Repair and operation
The correct board or control must match the equipment and sensor configuration.
If the fan is striking ice or the coil is fully blocked, shut the system down and request service.
